Threading vs waxing: what suits your skin

Both remove hair from the root, both last longer than shaving, and most people who get one done regularly have a clear preference — here is what actually separates them.

How threading works

Threading uses a twisted length of cotton thread, rolled across the skin to catch and pull hairs out at the follicle. It is done entirely with the thread and the beautician's hands — no wax, no chemicals, nothing applied to the skin beforehand. That makes it the more common choice for eyebrows and fine facial hair, where precision matters more than speed and the area being shaped is small.

Because nothing is applied to the skin, threading is generally considered gentler for sensitive or reactive skin, and for skin that is being treated with retinoids or other actives that make waxing riskier. It also tends to cause less redness afterwards, though a little is normal on sensitive skin regardless of method.

How waxing works

Waxing spreads a thin layer of warm wax over the area, presses a strip (or lets the wax itself set) over the hair, and pulls it away against the direction of growth — removing many hairs from a wider area in one motion. That makes it faster for larger areas like legs, arms or underarms, where threading one hair at a time would take far too long to be practical.

Because it involves heated product against the skin, waxing carries a slightly higher risk of irritation, ingrown hairs or a minor burn if the wax is too hot or the skin is not prepared properly. A patch test on a small area is a reasonable thing to ask for if you have not been waxed before, have sensitive skin, or are trying a different wax type for the first time.

Regrowth and how often you'll need it

Both methods pull hair from the root, so regrowth is generally slower than shaving — commonly somewhere in the region of two to six weeks before regrowth is noticeable enough to want it done again, though this varies a great deal by area, hair type and individual growth cycle. Eyebrow threading is usually wanted more often than body waxing simply because facial hair grows back faster and is more visible.
